Why Different Wavelengths?

Red light therapy (RLT) uses specific wavelengths of light. Different wavelengths interact with cells in different ways.

Ideally, RLT combines different wavelengths to reach different depths, because each wavelength penetrates the skin to a different depth and interacts with different parts of the cell.

For instance, shorter wavelengths, such as red light, penetrate the skin to a moderate depth and are absorbed mainly by mitochondria, the cell's power plants. Longer wavelengths, such as near-infrared light (NIR), penetrate further and reach deeper tissue such as muscle.

Most of the research concentrates on red and near-infrared light in the 633–940 nm range. This light is well absorbed by tissue and is studied mainly for its effect on cellular energy (ATP) [Hamblin 2017].

AURORA's pods emit five of the most studied wavelengths: 633 nm, 660 nm, 810 nm, 850 nm and 940 nm.

Depth of penetration

633 nm … 5–10 mm

660 nm … 5–12 mm

810 nm … 10–20 mm

850 nm … 10–25 mm

940 nm … 15–30 mm

Approximate values; depth varies with tissue and skin type.

red light wavelengths penetration depth

633 nm

Skin

Red light at 633 nm is studied for skin: collagen, texture and the look of fine lines [Wunsch 2014].

Surface tissue

The shortest wavelength in our pods, absorbed mainly in the skin.

660 nm

Skin & glow

Often studied together with 633 nm for skin appearance.

Muscle recovery

Athletes use 660 nm red light in their recovery routine; research on muscle soreness is promising [Ferraresi 2016].

810 nm

Deeper reach

Near-infrared light at 810 nm goes deeper than red light, reaching muscle.

Cellular energy

The most studied wavelength for its effect on mitochondria and ATP production [Hamblin 2017].

850 nm

Recovery

Athletes use 850 nm near-infrared as part of their post-training routine [Ferraresi 2016].

Deep and even

Penetrates well into muscle, and pairs with 810 nm for full-body coverage.

940 nm

Deepest reach

The longest wavelength in our pods, penetrating furthest into tissue.

Warmth & circulation

Studied for its effect on local blood flow; most people simply feel a pleasant warmth.
